Vibrant Victorian
When the present owners moved into this Victorian home, they saw it badly needed something most Victorians have in abundance: charisma. It was pedestrian.
Now, each formal room has its own identity. The parlor has richly detailed, custom-designed cabinetry flanking the room’s entry. The library is wrapped in floor-to-ceiling shelves made of mahogany. The dining room has a new hutch with glass and lead caming doors. Can’t-miss-me ruby red fabric papers the room.
The back of the house was expanded to contain a modern mudroom, family room and kitchen. The kitchen, hub of contemporary living, received abundant attention. A Lacanche range anchors an array of bespoke cabinets. The centerpiece is a custom farmer’s table, made of cherry (the owner’s favorite species). Opposite the kitchen is a butler’s pantry, also in cherry. A spacious new master suite graces the addition’s second floor.
Outside, a new porch extends across the two primary facades, giving the house needed depth and foreshortening the formal façade. We replaced a modern addition at the rear with more dramatic forms, bringing Victorian energy to the house’s unprepossessing posterior.
This once dull home is now radiant.
