Victorian Vim & Vigor

This old Queen Anne has a front-row view of the Atlantic. Over time, changes to the house reoriented it toward the water. As such, guests were met by a disinterested house. We were asked to re-engage the house with arriving family and guests and given three tools with which to work: a new carriage house, a new pool house, and a facelift of the home’s public facade.
Carriage House
The new carriage house is the first to greet visitors. An energetic Victorian façade announces arrival. Inside, the building is simple: three parking bays, a mudroom, and porch. The second floor is a guest suite. From the porch, two paths guide visitors to the main grounds and pool house.
Pool House
The new pool house is a single room retreat for the wife to relax, escape, and conduct business. Doors retract to open the building onto the pool during summer. A custom fireplace allows three-season use. A cathedral ceiling with exposed trusses gives the room spaciousness. Decorative architectural flourishes abound, giving this petite building an outsized personality.
The Residence
We added a deep porch across the façade and supported it with carefully proportioned columns. The porch asserts rhythm and order. Above the porch roof is a new, lively balustrade that borrows patterns found elsewhere on the house. It wants your attention and diverts gazes from the visual cacophony beyond.
The matriarch once again welcomes its guests.
