Luminous Back Bay Penthouse

What a location. A two-floor condo in the heart of the Back Bay, including a roof deck with exceptional views.

An unfortunate history of renovations gave us myriad tasks: open up the floors, replace the unsightly stair, and turn the haggard kitchen into the center for entertaining, with a twist: a deluxe pizza-oven. The capstone was the roof, where a tiny head house and an unassuming deck presented exciting opportunities.

We scrapped the lower floor, creating a large living room with a new stair as the focal point. A huge kitchen with a custom-made, copper pizza-oven, anchors the other end. The upper floor now has a master suite with views of the Prudential building.

Severe limits from the historical commission forced creative solutions to transform the dismal head house into a memorable destination. The big change: a pyramidal glass roof. Out with the dreary; in with the dramatic. The new stair to the roof created enough floor area at the head house to add a wet bar and sitting area. The stair has a glass floor at its landing, bringing light to lower floors. Large glass doors open onto the roof deck.

The old deck claimed 25% of the roof. The other 75% offered front row seats of Boston’s skyline, but the roof was pitched and difficult to reach. No matter, we bushwhacked our way and laid down a new deck with accoutrements. You will want to be on this owner’s A-list for summertime party invitations.
