Looking into the Past
This 1807 Federal house is on the National
Register. It is rare for its intact interiors, including
original paint – a remarkable window to early
American architecture. Bradford’s descendants
owned the house until the 1950s, never
modernized it, and then donated it to the town.
The building’s exterior deteriorated while it sat
vacant during the town’s ownership, threatening
its timber frame and interiors. We were asked
to evaluate the building’s health, structural and
cosmetic, and to prepare a preservation plan to
return it to good health. We worked with the
Duxbury Historical Society to implement the
stabilization and restoration plan in phases.
After completion, the society opened the
building to the public as a museum.
